Leaving Your Pet At Home When Going On Vacation

31

Are you planning on heading off on vacation? You might have decided to leave your pet dog behind at home. This can be the right decision if you know that you’re not going to have a lot of time for them on a packed agenda or if you are travelling to a tropical location. Long trips can be stressful for your dog and a tropical location will mean that they are stuck inside out of the heat. So, what steps should you take to ensure that you can leave your dog home alone?

Find A Carer

You need to make sure that there is someone who can stop in and check on your dog. At the very least they should be able to stop in for a couple of hours in the morning, evening and at least half an hour in the afternoon. The is the minimum attention that the carer should be providing your dog. However, the more time they can spend with your pet, the happier they will be. Remember, dogs are sociable animals and will not often cope well with being left alone for extended periods. That’s why if you are going to be gone a long time and you can’t find a suitable carer, kennels can be the best option.

Leaving your dog home alone can also be easier if you have a couple pets. That way they can keep one another company.

Use Tech

You can use tech to keep a check on your dog while you are away. This ensures that you don’t have to worry about whether your dog is okay while you’re on vacation. Tech like this can provide live feeds to your mobile device and also ensure that you can interact with your dog. They will be able to hear your voice and you will even be able to dispense treats for them. This can be highly comforting and ensure that they are far less stressed being home alone without you.

Ensure There’s Plenty Of Food

You do need to make sure that you are leaving enough food in the house for your pet. It’s important to make sure that your chosen carer knows where this is, when your dog gets fed and how much they need. This will guarantee that your dog gets the food they require while you are away. You can get wet dog food in bulk from shops like Barking Heads. This will guarantee that your carer won’t have to worry about buying any themselves.

You also need to make sure that the food and water bowl is in a clear place where your dog will be able to find them through the day.

Close Any Sensitive Rooms

Finally, dogs can get stressed when left alone. This can lead to them being destructive. As such, do make sure that any rooms with sensitive furniture or expensive items are closed off. You also need to make sure that wires are disconnected. At the same time, it’s important that your dog has plenty of space to wander throughout the home when the carer isn’t there.
