Known as Switzerland of America, Ouray Colorado is a small town with a population of 900 people. It is located in between the Rocky Mountains and has 13,000 foot snow-capped peaks of San Juan Mountain range surrounding it. All in all, the town will take your breath away as soon as you step out of the comfort of your Ouray hotel room.
In spite of being a small town, Ouray offers plenty to do for singles, couples, and families. There are historic museums, beautiful parks and several natural trails perfect for trekkers and climbers. If you are in Ouray for the first time, here are a few places and things you don’t want to miss out…
Ouray Hot Springs
There is a 750,000-gallon, natural sulfur-free mineral hot water spring pool located within the town. If you are staying at one of my favorite hotel in Ouray, that is the Ouray Chalet Inn, all you will have to do is walk for 9 minutes and you will arrive at Fellin Park, or Ouray Hot Springs Park as it is known as in the town. You can simply relax by soaking yourself in the hot water while surrounded by snowy peaks, or have fun at large playground, Skate Park, basketball or picklecall court established within the Fellin Park.
Black Canyon Park
This is a must visit park. It is spectacularly deep and has narrow gorge, making it impossible for the sun to enter. During winters, there is free access, but the roads are only maintained up to visitors’ center. You can go there for hiking and enjoy the wonderful views across canyon, or snowshoe or ski.
Ouray County Museum
The Museum is developed in the Joseph Miner’s Hospital created in 1886. There are three floors, packed with 38 exhibits in a total of 27 rooms. Some of the displays are showcased in hospital’s alcoves, and hall closets. The Indian artifacts and minerals displayed in the museum draw attention on social and cultural history of Ouray County and the entire San Juan Mountain area.
Historical District Walking Tour
While you are at the museum, pick up a historical district map, and take a relaxing stroll from place to place. There are over 25 beautifully constructed buildings which reflect unique architectural styles. All of these buildings were built by craftsmen and businessmen of the area.
Certainly there is much more to do in Ouray Colorado than what all is mentioned above. To summarize it can be said that it will be a worthy vacation trip, and you will cherish every day that you spent in this soothing and calming town of Ouray.
